In this Q&A with Mikko, he shares his insights about his mentoring journey with Aboad’s Chief Executive Officer Juha.

Many professionals recognize the value of mentorship and coaching but hesitate to pursue it. What motivated you to take this step?
“When I started as Global Head of Marketing of Fastems in the fall of 2019, I realized there was so much to learn and my concepts and ideas were far from perfect. I randomly bumped into a webinar by Juha in early 2020 and afterwards contacted him about mentoring, as he was presenting interesting frameworks and ideas. I suspected our minds could meet, and that’s what happened. I’m a person who likes and benefits greatly from sparring discussions. For me, it’s obvious that the best ideas are developed in the context of a conversation between two curious people. That’s why I took the initiative when I saw the chance.”
What types of marketing professionals could benefit most from marketing mentorship?
“Especially those in the early years of their careers, but also more experienced professionals, where the sparring is more collegial. The majority of SMEs have limited capacity to develop their marketing leaders, and getting external support can be very useful.”
What key improvements have you seen in your life and work during this period, both directly from the mentoring sessions and otherwise?
“Juha’s mentoring was a great support, especially during the first three years in my new role. I took many of my initial thoughts and concepts to discussion, which increased my overall confidence and made my learning curve much faster. Getting senior marketing insight into my doings was something my home organization could only partially provide. Talks with Juha helped me to make sense of my work, which helped in staying focused and energized as I was not alone with the issues I was facing. I also had an ‘anonymous’ setting to discuss them.
Many Fastems’ internal development projects benefited from the fresh perspectives we developed. These would include sales development, team roles, and demand generation strategies. Developing my strategic marketing framework and marketing director skill profile was especially helpful as well.
